Physical Education

INTENT

The intent of our PE and Sport curriculum is to foster respect, resilience, and responsibility among students while achieving the National Curriculum aims. By developing competence across a broad range of physical activities, students learn to respect their peers, coaches, and opponents. Through sustained physical activity, they build resilience by facing challenges and persevering in their fitness journeys. Engaging in competitive sports helps them to understand and manage both success and setbacks, reinforcing the importance of sportsmanship and fair play. Lastly, by promoting healthy, active lifestyles, students learn to take responsibility for their own health and well-being, preparing them for lifelong fitness and a balanced lifestyle.

IMPLEMENTATION

Key Stage 3

Students receive two hours of PE per week, complemented by extra-curricular activities. Our curriculum engages students through diverse physical activities like invasion games, HRF, athletics, striking and fielding, and OAA, and empowers them using the Me’s in PE framework—Physical Me, Thinking Me, Healthy Me, Leader Me, and Be the Best Me. We use models such as Sport Education and Direct Instruction to develop their physical skills, understanding of game strategies, and leadership abilities. Students evaluate their own and others’ performances through self-assessment and peer reviews, fostering respect for diverse talents, resilience through challenges, and responsibility for their learning. By the end of Year 7, students are confident movers; by Year 8, they apply sports strategies; by Year 9, they explore healthy lifestyles and leadership.

Key Stage 4 - Physical Education Core

Key Stage 4 students have a core PE programme of 2 hours per week. Core PE helps pupils acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to participate successfully in, and enjoy physical activities both now and in the future. For 1 hour a week, all pupils will be able to select an options pathway where they are able to select an individual pathway, which will help students develop their personal fitness and which promotes a healthy, active lifestyle, and lifelong participation. In the second hour, students participate in a range of activities such as striking and fielding, invasion games and health-related fitness. Pupils who have a further interest will be able to undertake examination and leadership courses in key stage 4.

GCSE PE

There is a one-year full course AQA GCSE examination offered in Years 10 and 11, which is 40% practical and 60% theory. To access this course, students must be taking part in regular physical activity outside of school and be part of a team or club.
